Kenya Minister Launches pioneering new Carbon Offset Project

co2balance’s new “Low Carbon Village” Project was officially unveiled this week in London by the Kenyan Minister for Tourism, the Rt Hon Najib Mohamed Balala.
The Minister hosted two events to showcase the Project, at the Kenyan High Commission in Westminster, and Knightsbridge Branch of the Cyldesdale Bank on Thursday 6th November.
The Low Carbon Village Project is based around installing a range of energy saving technologies into one village that reduces carbon emissions, as well as helping the local community save money on their fuel costs and provide local employment.
Speaking at the event, the Kenyan Minister announced that sustainable tourism “needs to become the norm and not the exception” in order to tackle climate change and that all businesses need to take action and responsibility for their carbon footprint.
Speaking about the role of carbon offsetting in protecting Kenya’s tourism industry, as well as the environment, the minister endorsed co2balance “triple benefit” approach that aids the environment as well as the local economy and communities within Africa, saying that it is the “correct way forward in tackling climate change”.
Project activity in the Low Carbon Villages include energy efficient stoves, bio-gas plant fuelled by animal waste, as well as large scale energy efficient stoves for the local bakery and school to replace less efficient models.
